A FORMER director of the New Road rt Haulage Co., and of Oak Garage Co., Ltd., both of Hoghton, near Preston, was at Lancaster Assizes last week sent to prison for 12 months, after being found guilty of seven charges of obtaining money, by false pretences, and one of theft whilst bailee.

He is Louis Stern, of Clifton Drive

South, St. Annes. It was stated that a total of £6,327 was involved. Stern was found not guilty of another charge, alleging fraudulent conversion of £1,300, on which the prosecution offered no evidence. it was alleged by the prosecution that Stern obtained cheques from a finance company by means of bogus hirepurchase forms, All of the cases except one related to private cars; the other related to a goods , vehicle which Sterd stole whilst it was on a hire-purchase agreement.

Stern told the court: " I ran into financial difficulties and did it to try and save my business and keep my head above water. There was never any intention of fraud for personal gain."
