Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A VOTING deadlock was created in r"-L Nottingham, last week, over an application by Skill's Motor Coaches to be placed on the education committee's list of operators providing transport for schoolchildren. The committee were recommended to approve, the move but, on the chairman's casting vote, they referred the matter back for further consideration because of the company's "attitude to trade unions."

Cllr. P. Holland proposed the reference back, saying: "It has come to my notice that the company do not agree with their drivers' membership of a trade union." He admitted that he did not know whether or not this were true, but urged that the position should be investigated before Skill's were put on the list.

He felt that. "in these enlightened days," employers should encourage their workers to join trade unions rather than discourage them. If Skill's did not recognize trade unions they could not be approached by union officials.

Cl1r. W. Derbyshire retorted that it was both wrong and unfair for a person who was not sure of his facts to make such remarks. Skill's, he added, were a firm of considerable repute, who paid their employees above the recognized union rates and had a waiting list of drivers "which would satisfy all the city transport undertaking's needs."

ED1NBURGH Transport Department's .11-1 plan to operate a five-day, 42-hour week by staggering shifts over a 14-hour day is being opposed by its employees, who want to continue the present policy of straight shifts, with a minimum of spreadover. The department is to hold further talks with employees.

THE coach-operating company, Smiths Tours (Wigan), Ltd., has been selected by the Ford Motor Co., Ltd., to convey Ford guests attending the International Tractor Convention, which starts in Hamburg next week. Smiths are to send of fleet of 10-18 coaches to Hamburg this week-end empty, and will then convey the Ford guests around the city.
