Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A BODY framework built up entirely from a standard section of rolled steel is described in patent No. 885,279. The members are united by spot welding to cruciform connecting pieces. (D. Withers, Waverley Ridge, Crafers, South Australia.)

The drawing shows the layout of a coach body and, in detail, a typical section of the material used, It consists of a rolled channel of " top-hat " section as shown at (1). Specially shaped cruciform gussets (2) fit closely to the sides and underface of the channel, thus providing a satisfactory assembly for spot welding as all the parts are open-ended and in face-to-face contact.

The use of a standard single section means that a few simple bending tools are all that is necessary to prepare the assembly for welding. An importan feature of the patent is the way in wfnicl complex shapes in the frame parts ar confined to the small gusset pieces, there by simplifying manufacture.
