FOD EN AND ERE buyers are to be offered uprated versions of Caterpillar and Cummins engines. The American engine rivals are expected to replace their unit injector and HEUI fuel systems with European-style commonrail injection in time for the next step-down in US emission limits in 2007.

Cummins plans to ditch its inhouse Celect and HPI as well as its CAPS systems in favour of more versatile technology which can make injection pressures of 1,600 bar or more continuously available, even at low engine speeds.

Both companies are negotiating with Bosch to use its second-generation common-rail equipment — just adopted by MAN on the D20 engine — or even its APCRS (amplifier piston common-rail system) which delivers up to 2,500 bar at the nozzle from a relatively modest 1,000 bar in the rail. It is thought that Caterpillar in particular would like to manufacture some components in-house.

Cummins 4-litre and 6-litre ISBe diesels are already equipped with Bosch common-rail hardware. But in heavier-duty applications matters are made more complicated by the HPI collaboration with Scania. However, the Swedish company has already said the transatlantic fuel system technical and manufacturing agreement (dating from 1992) is expected to continue beyond HPI into variations on the "accumulator" (common-rail) theme.

Bosch is bound to have significant input into that programme.
