Home Secretary David Blunkett says: "Dangerous drivers who kill should be properly punished. ThE devastation they cause is immeasurable, not only for victims' families, but foi whole communities. This increase sends out a very strong signal about how seriously the government regards the crime."
Blunkett is empowered to increase the sentence under the Criminal Justice Act 2003, which the government characterises as "the most significant overhaul of the criminal justice system in a generation",
