AN appeal by Bradfield Rural District Council to effect a fare reduction on the service of the Thames Valley Traction Co., Ltd., between Reading and Padworth has been refused by the Minister of Transport. The council have been ordered to pay the costs incurred by the Minister in connection with the inquiry.

The appeal was against a decision of the South Eastern Traffic Commissioners and proposed that the ordinary mile-age basis should be waived to reduce the fare from Is. 11d. to is. 8d.

Undesirable consequences which would increase the service's losses and endanger its continuation would result from a variation, said the Minister.

BUS OPERATOR THREATENS TO CEASE RUNNING

I-1 A PENRITH bus operator has stated that he will discontinue his rural services after September unless some Government help, such as the relief of fuel tax, is given.

This notice was discussed at last week's meeting of Penrith Rural District Council. Mr. E. Hartness, who runs services to Wigton, Carlisle and Ainstable, had asked them to press for a reduction in fuel tax.

A similar request by Ribble Motor. Services, Ltd., was also considered. The council decided to write to the Chancellor of the Exchequer and the Minister of Transport.

NO MEN FOR BUSES

THE high employment level in Bradford made it impossible to recruit more workers for bus crews. There was nothing the transport department could do to meet complaints of inadequate services at peak periods.

Mr. C. T. Humpidge, general manager, said this last week, and added that about 5 per cent. of the vehicles which would run at peak times had to remain in the depots because there were no crews to man them.

NEW TUNNEL SCHEME

A N independent scheme for a Channel 1"V-funnel .was put forward last week by Messrs. Brown, Colquhoun and Partners, engineering consultants. It would provide for the transport of 200 vehicles an hour by rail.
