• Tyre servicing and repair firm Motorway Tyre and Auto Centres has set up a new freephorie number to provide better assistance and operational benefits for LGV customers. The Commercial Vehicle 24-hour emergency service provides LGV account customers with a rapid response roadside assistance service.

Cheaper insurance

• Insurance firm Eagle Star has launched a new haulier's liability policy which offers no-claims discounts and other premium savings where alarms or tracker systems are fitted. The Freightstar policy offers 20% premium discount for vehicles fitted with approved alarms and immobilisers;

10% no-claims discount for every claims-free year; 5% premium discount for existing Eagle Stat. motor fleet policy holders; 2.5% premium discount where all vehicles are fitted with an approved stolen vehicle tracking system.

SMMT report

• A new report from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders—The SMMT UK Commercial Vehicle Market Review of 1995—analyses a number of different regional and area trends in a market which overall grew by 9.6% last year. Rentals growth

• A new report from Marketline International reveals the value of the UK truck rental market has now risen to £253 million but the rate of growth has slowed over the last three years. The report—UK Truck Rental— shows that although the market grew by £18 million between 1994-95, the rate of growth has fallen from 14% in 1993 to 7.7% in 1995. However, the report also predicts that by 2001 the market will be worth E.305 million, an increase of 21%. Cost: £245.

TRAINING

In-house training

• Parcel carrier Securicor Omega Express is to offer its staff NVQ and SVQ training and qualifications from October, following the success of a pilot project earlier this year. Securicor expects a large number of its staff to sign up to the 'Transporting Goods by Road' course set up by the Road Haulage and Distribution Training Council.

Bodybuilding training

• Commercial vehicle bodybuilders and trailer manufacturer, the Cartwright Group, has opened its new training school at the company's Altrincham, Cheshire plant. The purposebuilt school, which was opened by MP Sir Fergus Montgomery, is equipped with computer-aided design technology. Students will work both collectively and individually on specific projects, as well as receiving lectures from industry professionals.

Frig training

• Transport refrigeration company Reefur Services, has recently introduced its own in-house engineers training scheme. The new 18month course will provide training in mechanical, electrical and refrigeration Gordon's Transport of Pontefract has had two trailers worth 220,000 stolen from a Deportment of Transport lorry park and weighbridge site at Sawtry off the Al. The theft took place between 14:30hrs on Friday 21 June and 08:00hrs on Monday 24. The trailers are a Weighman 214/64ft extendible triaxle--chassis number Al 68800—and a Broshuis 60ft two axle— chassis number 998291/18. Contact: 01977 607208.

Nottingham police are appealing for information about the theft of an lveco Ford twoaxle rigid that was found abandoned at 01:00hrs on 25 May one mile north of J34 of the M1 on the northbound side. A large number of sheep, stolen hours earlier from fields near the Granada Services at Trowell, Notts were found inside the vehicle. Some were dead.
