Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• When the Oldbury division of Albright and Wilson Ltd reviewed its replacement programme for its bulk tankers, it was decided-that one of the older eight-wheelers in the fleet, a five-year-old AEC Mammoth Major chassis, had become uneconomic in the present circumstances and the 2600 gal capacity of the tank was not being fully utilized.

But the company has minimized the cost of switching to a more efficient articulated operation by having the 24ft.-long elliptical stainless steel tank — originally built by Andrews of Aintree — converted into a chassisless semi-trailer unit. The conversion was undertaken at the Warrington branch of the truck equipment division of the York Trailer Co. Ltd.

After removal from the AEC chassis the tank shell was reinforced with under-belly stiffening ribs. York RG5A 18 tons capacity tandem running gear was added, together with a kingpin and rubbing plate and crossbraced landing legs. The bogie subframe is extended to form a support cradle for the Drum B6 hydraulically actuated carg,o pump, which has replaced the pto driven mechanical pump on the rigid chassis.

As a semi-trailer, tailor-made for restricted access deliveries, the tank trailer weighs 4 tons 1 lcwt and can be operated at up to 28 tons gcw, at which weight around 16.5 tons of product can be carried, compared with about 14 tons as a 24-ton gvw rigid.

The story does not .end with the conversion of the tank. York's Warrington branch has cut down the AEC 8 X 2 chassis to a 9ft 6in. wheelbase four-wheeled tractor plated at 32 tons gcw. The driving axle has new overslung rear springs while those on the front axle are modified to give a 5+ tons plated rating. The addition of a power-assisted handbrake completes the conversion to bring the specification up to normal AEC Mandator standard. With its Ergomatic tilt cab, the machine is externally indistinguishable from a factory-built Mandator.
