THE Haulier Sectional Board of A.R.O. has informed us that it does not agree with the policy of compulsory amalgamation of road hauliers recently advanced in the booklet, " The Road Carrying Industry and the Future." It considers that the right of the individual to engage in industry, no matter how small his concern, is a fundamental of post-war policy, indissolubly linked with the freedom of the Citizen, and that such right must be conceded, subject always to the interest of the community as a whole.

The Board will publish, so soon as possible, its own statement of policy for hauliers. This will show clearly that the right of every haulier to operate his own business is fully in accordance with the general interests of the community.

Another condemnation of this booklet was expressed at a meeting of the committee of Scunthorpe Sub-area .of A.R.O., held on January 25. It was resolved that the present director of A.R.O. should be asked to intimate immediately to all areas and sub-areas

'of the Association, M.P.s, chambers of commerce and the Press, a refutation that A.R.O. in. any way agreed with the views expressed in the booklet ; that the general secretary of A.R.O. be asked to give an assurance that no senior executive officers, staff or employees of A.R.O. were in any way concerned by advice or collaboration in its preparation ; that the committee conderrins the action of Mr. A. And (member of the National Council of A.R.O.), and of Mr. J. F, E. Pye (chairman, Metropolitan Area, A.R.O.) in that they associated themselves with the preparation of this booklet, the subject matter of which, in the opinion of the committee, is disadvantageous to members of A.R.O., and to roadtransport contractors generally.
