When I pay for or charge for, services or goods on the Continent in fellow EU states—provided the person I deal with can show a VAT (or equivalent) number—no VAT is charged or levied. However when I fill up, my truck with diesel at a VAT-registered garage abroad, I am charged VAT. In my cab I carry a community authori sation document. Why cannot my VAT number be added to this document to show at fuel filling points to avoid the tortuous process of reclamation? Maybe some champion of the haulage industry with parliamentary lobbying powers could address this costly oversight and put in place a simple solution. A Vant, Faversham, Kent.
