Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Volkswagen's truckbuilding operation in Brazil has produced a concept vehicle featuring the latest all-electronic version of Cummins' B-Series engine with an electronically controlled Eaton gearbox.

The 16.2XX is a development of the 16.200 Resende, a 16-tonne 4x2 rigid chassis which was launched at the Fenatran Show in September (CM915 October). The new truck, rated at 20 tonnes, uses Cummins' ISB engine, an electronically controlled update of the six-pot, 5.9litre B-Series. Like Cummins' larger M11, the charge-cooled ISB can be specified with ESP (Electronic Smart Power), giving it a choice of two torque curves and power ratings; in this case 200hp and 275hp. It switches between them automatically to suit load and road conditions. Other innovations include the Insite diagnostic system, which stores information on engine usage, sets oil-change intervals and predicts likely faults.

The main mechanical changes are the adoption of a 24-valve cylinder head and a high-pressure fuel-injection system; other components are strengthened and accessory drives have been improved.

The 16.2XX's new Eaton Autoshift sixspeeder dispenses with mechanical synchroniser rings: electronic control matches engine and gearbox speeds, like the system used in ZF's ASTronic box. But in this case shifting is handled by electric motors, controlled by an Allison-style push-button panel. At 165kg the box is lighter than a conventional unit and more efficient than a standard automatic.
