by the Minister of Transport, shows that the number of holders of carriers' licences current on April 30, 1936, was 215,368, the number of licences of all classes being 224,771. The number of vehicles in possession was 460,016—an average of 2.05 per licence.

The return also analyses the different classes of operator according to the number of motor vehicles (excluding trailers) owned at April 30 last. It also contains information as to the general character of the haulage business carried on by the holders of B licences, and gives the number of such licensees authorized to carry various commodities for hire or reward. These figures are further analysed to indicate the zones within which these commodities may be carried. The return may be obtained from H.M. Stationery Office, price 6d. net, or by post 7d.

" Royals " of the Future.

As is now well known, next year's Royal Show—the 96th—will be held at Wolverhampton, on a site in Wrottesley Park, from July 6-10. In the following year, Cardiff will be the venue of the Show, whilst, in 1939, which is the centenary of the Royal Agricultural Society of England, His Majesty the King has signified his approval of the Show being held in Windsor Great Park —the scene of the Society's Jubilee Show in 1889.

Associations Secure Higher Rates.

As a result of representations by the Associations and the Transport and General Workers Union, Stoke-onTrent General Purposes Committee has decided slightly to increase the municipal haulage rates. The charge for 30cwt. lorries is to he increased from 3s. 41d. to 3s. 6d. an hour and for 2-tonners, from 3s. 8d. to 3s. 10d. per hour.

The Treatment of Oil.

At a meeting, to be held on December 9, at 5 p.m., at Caxton Hall, Westminster, London, S.W.1; under the• auspices of the Diesel Engine Users Association, Mr. A. Beale will read a paper on " The Treatment of Fuel and Lubrication Oil—Filtration and Renovation."

Railway Bid to Regain Traffic.

Following strong opposition from road operators, the Northern Licensing Authority, at Newcastle-on-Tyne, last week, deferred his decision in an application by the L.N.E. Railway Co., for permission to run 10 motor vehicles and 10 trailers, in place of 16 horses and special horse-drawn trailers in the Stockton-on-Tees area. The vehicles were to be used for collection and delivery.

Replying to Mr. T. H. Campbell Wardlaw, for road objectors, Mr. J. Hancock, general goods manager for the L.N.E.R. in Stockton, denied that the company was asking for these extra vehicles in order that the 21 motors already possessed could be used solely

B2 for road-borne traffic. Asking that the application be refused, Mr. Warcllaw contended that behind it was the object, on the part of the railway, of recovering lost traffic, and that the plea that motor vehicles would lead to greater efficiency was put forward only to bolster up the case.

Vulcan Holds Sales Conference.

On Tuesday a sales conference was organized at Southport for distributors and agents of the Vulcan Motor and Engineering Co., Ltd., to inspect the 1937 range of chassis (described on pages 538-9 of this issue). Some 100 guests attended a luncheon given by the directors.

LORD NUFFIELD'S PROFITSHARING, SCHEME.

It was announced on Monday that Lord Nuffield is to establish a special fund, under which the operatives in his various factories will become shareholders. The fund is represented by 1,000,000 ordinary stock units of Morris Motors, Ltd., the dividends on which are to be used to create a Morris fund. This will ensure that workers, in addition to receiving holiday wages, will participate in the dividends of the organization. The present market value of the units is over 22,000,400. The scheme covers all the trading organizations of Lord Nuffield.
