they are afraid the buses will overturn—a special fare concession has been announced in Rome. In future, passengers who travel in this way will receive a reduction of over 10 per cent, on the price of their tickets. Double-deckers are rare in the city, and the reduction aims at makMg them popular by inducing passengers to overcome their fear that the buses .will capsize on the sharp ups and downs of the Seven Hills. .

from the public, relates to the time when oil-engined buses were first put on the streets of London in any considerable quantity. The first small batch was rather noisy and emitted a certain amount of smell. Next, 100 were put into operation on a route from Ealing, including Oxford Street, but it was rumoured that they were on the PiccadillyHammersmith service, and Scotland Yard was, consequently, inundated with complaints as to the noise and smell of the petrol buses on the latter route, practically none being received regarding the route upon which the oilers were actually running.

ANEW type of road-safety propaganda is being introduced by the Chief Constable of Wakefield, .Mr. B. Yelloly. In show cases in three leading thoroughfares are being displayed in heavy type the local road-accident figures for the past week, along with the figures for the previous week. Above the figures is a sketch map showing the 13 principal danger spots ill, the city, and beneath the map are the words "A few seconds longer taken in passing through these zones will reduce the city's accident toll."

Good Publicity May Do Much to Reduce Accidents

Don't be Vague. Ask THE Under Secretary to the for Home Office StaI Home Office stated in the

tistiu! House of Commons, a few weeks ago, that between 200 and 300 roundabouts and one-way systems were in operation in the Metropolitan police district, but that to collate the accident statistics relating to them would require an expenditure of time and money that was not justifiable by the results. We should have thought that it would have been quite impossible to have collated the statistics with any degree of accuracy, in view of the fact that the Under Secretary cannot even estimate the number of systems more closely than to within 33 per cent, of the possible maximum.

Finding none in stock, the attendant offered Luvax shock. absorber fluid as an alternative. This offer was, of course, refused, the latter being of considerably greater viscosity and quite unsuitable for the specific purpose in question.

We draw attention to the incident, because an inexperienced man might, unknowingly, have accepted the proffered substitute with possibly serious consequences. The importance of using, for proprietary equipment, the appropriate maker's preparation, where supplied, cannot be over-stressed. A New Material for HE latest blending agent for llaisi ng the Octane A obtaining high-octane fuels Number is isopropyl ether. Results with this material and with isooctane each Menden with an aviation spirit containing 3 c.c. of tetraethyl lead to give a 100-octane fuel, and with an iso-octane with a similar amount of lead to produce a 92-octane fuel, showed that the minimum consumption of the former was lower under cruising conditions than the 92-octane, but higher than the 100-octane iso-octane blend. The ether material has a blending value slightly superior to theiso-octane and less lead is required to give a high octane number. A survey of the source of supply in the U.S.A. showed that there is sufficient isopropyl ether to produce 850,000,000 gallons a year of 100-octane fuel.
