Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

I N the next few weeks, licensing authorities will be dealing with the many applications for permission to increase fares or alter fares structures which are pouring in from municipal and company operators. On August 28. the Northern Licensing Authority will hear the application of Newcastle Corporation for revised fare tables.

Single fares of 3d. and over which were not increased in 1948 are proposed to be raised by Ad., and workmen's fares are to be withdrawn except in the area of the Gateshead and District Omnibus Co. Alterations in stage lengths are another feature of the Newcastle application, in which over 50 routes are affected.

On the same day, the application of Darlington Triumph Services, Ltd., will be heard. The penny fare is proposed .to be replaced by a lid. fare, and all others increased by id. or Id., whilst the minimum return fare will be 7d. instead of 5id. . Increased fares on the same basis are to be applied for by Fawn Lea Omnibus Cu., Ltd., Darlington.

On August 15. the Northern Licensing Authority will hear applications for increased fares submitted by Alton Brothers (Trimdon), Ltd., Cecil Moffit, Hexham, Mrs. A. C. Norfolk. Stocksfield,' Shaw Bros.. Spennymoor. and H. Frazer, Ltd., Swalwell.

Increases of id. on all single fares and 14. on all return fares, except single and return tickets over 6d. and the children's Id. fare, form the basis of an application to be made by South

ampton Corporation. Fare stages are also to be adjusted to a standard of one mile for the minimum fare of lid.; and the period during which concession return fares are available is to be extended.

The Scottish Licensing Authority will shortly be hearing the application of David Lawson, Ltd., Kirkintilloch, to increase fares on services embracing Glasgow and Kirkintilloch. Paisley and District Omnibus Co., Ltd.. and Young's Bus Service, Ltd.. Paisley,. have also lodged applications, services in Paisley, Glasgow and Johnstone being affected.

In the south. Gosport and Fareham Omnibus Co. is to apply for a id. increase on all but the intermediate Id. fares. These will be retained, but stage lengths will be reduced. Workmen's fares, it is proposed, will be increased by Id.

New Scale at Exeter New fares based on a lid. minimum and a uniform I id. per mile were granted last week by the Western Licensing Authority to Exeter Transport Department. Last year the undertaking sustained a deficit of £25,550, which would have been increased to L36,216 in the current year if no fare increases were made.

The Devon General Omnibus and Touring Co.. Ltd., was granted permission to increase fares on routes corresponding to those operated by the corporation. The concern is also taking over some of the corporation routes to assist the undertaking.
