Ton Raised in 6 Sec.

CAPABLE of raising over ton to a

• -•• height of 9 ft. 24 in. in about 6 sec,, a new, front-end bucket loader for use with their model 900 industrial tractor has been produced by David Brown Construction Equipment, Ltd., Hanworth Park, Feltham, Middx.

The pivotal point is unusually high, and this facilitates transference of weight to the rear wheels as the f-cu.-yd. bucket is loaded, as well as providing a long reach in the elevated position. Method of attachment of the loader carries the thrust to the casing of the rear axle. and not the chassis.

A 1-cu.-yd. bucket may be used for light material, and various alternative attachments are offered.

Polythene Matting HARD-WEARING polythene matting is being offered by Rootes, Ltd., Ladbroke Hall, Barlby Road, London. W.10, in packets containing six 4-in. squares. The squares may be interlocked to cover any shape of area and used for flooring material and various other purposes. Known as Polymat, the material is available in eight different colours and costs 7d. per square. It is claimed to have good anti-slip properties.

Tighter Turns CillEF of the latest improvements made by the American Hyster company to their range of fork-lift trucks is a redesigned steering layout to reduce the diameter of the turning circles by about 4 ft. The appliances concerned have capacities of 71-10 short tons; the diameter of the turning circle of the smallest types is now 25 ft. 8 in., and of the biggest 26 ft. 2 in.

These are claimed to be the smallest turning circles for niachincs of such sizes. Chrysler V-8 154 ,b.h.p. engines may now be supplied with torque-converter transmission, as is preferred for trucks which have to operate over rough or loose surfaces. Power-assisted steering is standard.

Sensitive Governor ASENSITIVE governor system for any range of maximum road speed desired is now available from Holley Carburetor Co., of Michigan, U.S.A. The road-speed governor valve, driven by the speedometer cable from the transmission, combines centrifugal speed control with vacuum actuation of the diaphragm which regulates the governor throttle.

The road-speed governor controls only the maximum speed of the vehicle, but equipment to regulate the higher range of engine speed when 'going through the gears or operating in low gear can be supplied. This is done by means of the existing engine-driven governor control valve which is arranged to limit -engine revolutions in the higher range required for low-gear operation.

If both low-gear engine speed and road speed are to be controlled, the road-speed governor valve and the engine goVernor valve may be arranged in series. In this case both valves communicate with the same control *ilia phragm and throttle in the combination carburetter and governor body.

Solid Spare Tyre A SPARE tyre which cannot deflate and rli• takes up less than a third of the room

• normally occupied has been developed by the Firestone Tyre and Rubber Co. in America. Known as the Perma Spare, it weighs only 30 lb. and can carry a vehicle for some 100 miles at speeds up to 40 m.p.h.

A thin steel disc with a smooth 2-in. rubber tread 11--in. thick is used, and can be installed by removal of the hub cap and attaching with the wheel studs to the out, side of a damaged tyre. To obviate damage to a deflated tyre, the spare wheel is made slightly larger in diameter than the tyre it is designed to support.

Individual Patterns BODYBUILDERS, particularly those specializing in making mobile demonstration vehicles and similar outfits, are likely customers of Duprint Laminated Fabrics, Ltd.., 36-42 Staines Road West, Sunbury-on-Thames, Middx. This company offers a process for mdking laminated melamine panelling whereby the veneer can be of any individually chosen pattern.

Customers select a textile fabric and this is moulded into panels in sizeS of up to 9 ft. by 4 ft. Special designs can be printed on paper and photographic prints can be used. The cost is said to compare reasonably with that of melamine panelling sold with standard patterns.

Multi-purpose Adhesive pITABOND is a new general-purpose 1 adhesive sold at £3 3s. a gallon by Caulking Services, Ltd., 36 Great Queen Street, London, W.C.2. Among the materials to which it can be applied are bricks, ceramics, cloth, cork, glass, plastics, stone and wood.

The product is an emulsion which may be thinned with water. For joining wood, hand pressure is stated to be sufficiently effective to obtain a strong bond without need for heavy cramping.
