EVERY endeavour will be made by the Scottish Co-operative Wholesale Society to have their garages registered as testing stations under the Government's scheme for compulsory examination of old vehicles. This was stated by Mr. H. M. Dick, transport manager, in Glasgow last week when he addressed a meeting of managers of the co-operative movement.
The number of faults found on vehicles by spot-checks was high, and C-licence operators were the worst offenders. In a day's examination recently, 87 per cent. of the vehicles were found to require attention and 41 per cent, needed immediate repairs to brakes and steering.
Ministry of Transport officials were increasingly out to prosecute owners who did not properly maintain vehicles.
S.L.T. RILL UNOPPOSED
THE South Lancashire Transport Bill last week passed unopposed through the Bills Committee of the House of Lords, and now awaits its third reading. It is proposed to transfer the undertaking of the South Lancashire Transport Co., Ltd., to Lancashire United Transport, Ltd., and to discontinue the use of trolleybuses in the S.L.T. area.
