Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

TTENTION to the mainra-tenance Of vehicles should certainly include that of the bodies. Not long ago we saw a lorry which, whilst it appeared to be travelling quite well, bore a body which was almost a ruin, with the sides and tailboard lifting clear of the floor at every bump and jagged pieces of board projecting at various points. .No doubt a little periodical attention would have prevented it reaching a condition when repair was almost impossible.

• Body Repair Almost as Important as Chastis Maintenance .

Vichy Convoy Reaches NEWS comes from Vichy

Dakar on Producer that an important convoy of lorries under the command

of Captain Lancrenon, of the French Colonial Artillery, has succeeded in making the difficult journey from Oran to Dakar on producer gas. The vehicles were equipped with charcoal-fuel equipment and for the first time in history a new route along the border of Spanish Rio de Oro territory was followed. This country is for the most part utterly waterless and much of it still remains unexplored. The journey of 2,500 miles, via French Morocco and Mauretania, took five weeks. In time of peace the opening up of a new motoring route to

the coast through a part of t]ie Western Sahara desert, hitherto regarded as impassable, would be a matter ' of great general interest. Just now, unfortunately, it is simply annoying. Vichy, in all but open alliance with our enemy, appears to have found a relatively short cut for carrying supplies to the Dakar garrison

Willing Vehicles r VERY day 500 workmen briven Hard Through L-1frorn one district in the the Shortage , South travel by road to help with clearance and reconstruction in South-east London. The lorries are in constant use, for each must do three journeys during the day, carrying material and debris to and from the bombed sites. They have been on this job incessantly throughout the summer with no chance of a proper overhaul and no spares obtainable. • Each machine is tinkered up overnight so that the men can arrive on time in the morning, but the return journey is "part of another story." Breakdowns are frequent and the men get home when and how they can. As they are paid for the morning journey, but not for the evening one, small wonder if they exercise the British workman's right to grouse—the lorries, uncomplaining, carry en.

THREATENED shortages I of petrol in America have quickly been turned to account by the Boston and Maine Railroad. Advertisements admitted that 10 years ago the railway had twice as many Boston season-ticket holders for whom they could easily cater .again. " If 50 per cent. of the regular Boston commuters turned to rail service," say the advertisements, " the threatened shortage of gasoline would be minimized." The public is promised that the railway will give a tenth of any increased season-ticket revenue during the next six months to the building of fire-fighting units for rail use in the towns served by the Boston and Maine. "Our cars are not all 1942 models, but our standards of comfort, performance, safety, personnel alertness and responsibility are up to the standards of the moment," say the announcements, and so, one might add, is the company's propaganda sense U.S.A. Railway Takes Advantage of Petrol Restriction . . . .

Porous-metal Filter A NEW filter Material known

Made from Compacted as Porex is announced by Powder General blotors Corporation.

This is a porous metal product capable of removing foreign matter from liquids such as oil, and of altering the characteristics of gases by diffusion. -The new filter material can be applied to a great variety of purposes, such as to prevent clogging of orifices in Diesel injectors, with effective removal of fibrous materials. The manufacture of Porex constitutes an extension of the methods employed in making porous bronze bearings. Powdered metal, subjected to a series of processing operations including specially conditioned pressing, forins a metallic sponge Which can act as a filter. The -mesh of the filter is regulated by the size of grains in • the powdered metal employed. It may be noted that the making of Porex bears a fairly close analogy to methods used in the production of certain plastic articles. The new product is available in many forms.
