The annual report of the surveyor to the Somerset County Council which has just been issued for the 12 months covering a part of 1924 and 1925 contains some interesting figures relating to the cost of operating the council's 17 steam wagons, ten of which are of Sentinel make and the others of Foden manufacture. The average cost of the fleet Per working day amounted to £2 16s., other average cost figures being as follow :—Per loaded mile, 4s. 0.33d. ;. per mile run, 2s. 0.60d. ; per ton carried, 2s. 8.01d.; and per ton-mile, 9.37d. The total working costs for the fleet totalled £12,250. this figure including wages, coal, oil, tyres, repairs and renewals, depreciation at 15 per cent, per annum, insurance, licences and sundries, the first-named absorbing practically 40 per cent. of the total expenditure.
