Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

fr HERE are two exhibits on this stand, both of the latest 40-50-cwt. type, which, as recently recorded in The Commercial Motor, have been improved in many respects.

One of the vehicles is a chassis, whilst the other is fitted with a platform body and a cab for the driver. An examination of the chassis will show that it is constructed on very straightforward lines, the power unit being a Continental motor of the fourcylinder type with detachable head; this is constructed as one assembly with the clutch and the gearbox, the latter providing three forward speeds. The gearshafts are hardened and ground, and are carried in large antifriction bearings. The whole unit is suspended at three points so as to be independent of frame distortion.

Behind the gearbox a large fabric universal joint takes the drive to an open propeller shaft ; it terminates on a cross-member about half-way along the length of the frame ; at this point a steady bearing is introduced, and thereafter the drive is conveyed from the -open propeller shaft with metal-tometal joints to bevel gears on the back axle. All the wheels are mounted on Timken adjustable roller bearings.

The frame is a very substantial piece 4")f work, the channel side-members being straight and of uniform section from endto end ; they are braced by rigid cross-members, and above the back axle an additional bracing is employed. .Semi-elliptic springs are used at the front and rear, and both brakes take effect upon rear-wheel drums, one set expanding while the other set consists of contracting bands. The gear and brake levers are mounted centrally and the steering column is practically vertical.

The complete vehicle shown is fitted with platform body built by Barnaby, of Hull, which includes a cab, affording excellentweather protection for the driver and fitted with a windscreen at the front. Both these chassis are fitted with wooden-spoke wheels, on which are mounted risk semi-solid tyres.
