Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

lUr ANY exhibits of interest to IY_Liminicipal engineers and authorities are to be found on this stand. One of the first to attract attention is a 12-ton road roller, which is driven by a faur-cylinder engine arranged to run on heavy-oil fuel. The engine and transmission mechanism are mounted high up on a removable subframe so as to render repairs an easy matter, and two speeds are provided for both forward and reverse running. The gears are constantly in mesh, and it will be recalled that the drive embodies a cushioning device to absorb shock.

• A canopy is fitted which extends over the power unit and over the platform upon which the driver stands, and the various controls are conveniently arranged.

Another interesting municipal machine is the combined road-spraying, sweeping and flushing vehicle, which has a tank capacity of 770 gallons. A centrifugal pump is fitted, driven from the gearbox by a separate shaft and delivering water under pressure to the spray box and flushing jets, the roadsweeping mechanism is separately controlled.

A feature of this machine is that it can be used as an emergency first-aid fire appliance, as it can throw two 1-in. jets to a height of 100 ft.

The fire-fighting trailer unit is also shown. In addition to this there is a gully-emptying machine of 1,100 gallons capacity, a vacuum cleaning machine, mounted on a four-cylinder trolley, with a capacity of 48 cubic yds. per hour, and a 21-ton commercial chassis for passenger duty and rapid transport.

The last-named has a four-cylinder engine of 90 mm. bore and 130 mm. stroke with push-rod-operated overhead valves. Mounted in one unit is a three-forward-speed gearbox, and from this an exceptionally large tubular propeller shaft, fitted with two fabric joints, extends to the rear axle; the latter is of an unusual built-up construction and contains a double reduction bevel drive. The pedal operates brakes upon all four Wheels, those at the front being of the Perrot type.

The rear, brakes are of interest in that two cam spindles are used in front of and behind the rear axle levers, those spindles being coupled up by rods so as to move together.

The suspension system consists of long semi-elliptic springs working in conjunction with pneumatic tyres, This chassis is fitted with a lighting and starting -set, and grease-gun connections are provided to all working parts.
