Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Twell-known Glasgow concern is showing a wide range of products, including two interesting stripped chassis, vehicles intended for freight carrying and vehicles of the passenger-carrying: type.

The Halley 4-ton chassis is shown fitted with a 1,000-gallon petrol tank divided into three compartments, the mechanical details of which are of considerable interest.

A six-cylinder type of engine is employed, and the transmission consists of a single-plate clutch, four-forward-speed gearbox, and worm-driven back axle. Ap interesting point is that all the important parts of the transmission ate carried on Timken adjustable roller bearings. Incidentally, the design is such that the wheels can be detached from the hubs for re-tyring without disturbing the hub bearings.

Another interesting exhibit is the 3-ton chassis fitted with a body for carrying petrol in tins, this having a 30 h.p. four-cylinder engine, but in other respects conforming to the design of the 4-tonner, as regards transmission details. The bore and stroke of the engine are 4 ins. and 5/ ins. respectively. Of the stripped chassis on view one of particular interest is the 30-cwt. type, designed in accordance with the latest W.D. specification for a light lorry. A four-cylinder engine is fitted, with detachable head, and both the camshaft and valve tappets can be reached through a large inspection door extending the entire length of ,the cylinder block.

The clutch and gearbox are mounted as a unit with the engine, the whole being three-point suspended so that it is unaffected by frame distortion; four forward speeds with central control are provided ; a fully floating bear axle is employed, with an overhead worm, drive, the majority of the transmission bearings being of the Timken roller type, as in the case of the lorries already de

scribed. Both hand and foot brakes operate side by side on rear wheel drums, and the grease-gun method of chassis lubrication is adopted throughout.

The other stripped chassis exhibited is a 2-tonner, designed on lines very similar to those of the -30-cwt. subsidy type. This has a four-cylinder engine, rated at 26-40 h.p., with a bore and stroke of 31 ins, and 5 ins. respectively. The propeller shaft used ta convey the drive to the worm and wheel in the rear axle is fitted with enclosed universal joints, the working parts of which are made of hardened steel.

An interesting feature of this chassis is the cam-and-lever type of steering gear employed which, in conjunction with the ball-jointed link gear, ensures easy control. The petrol tank is secured to the dashboard and embodies a reserve compartment brought into action when desired by means of a special shutoff cock. All the working parts of the chassis are fitted with connections for the pressure system of grease-gun lubrication.

• Of the three passehger vehicles on view, perhaps the most interesting is the 31-seater bus on the Kenilworth chassis; although the load level is reasonably low, this has been obtained without cranking the frame, the side members of which are straight in elevation from, end to end. This chassis is fitted with the Halley six-cylinder engine, a single-plate clutch, a four-forward-speed gearbox and a worm-driven rear axle. The complete vehicle has a very refined appearance,and is attractively finished. There are two entrances on the near side, one being at the rear, and one controlled by the driver at the front end ; the majority of the seating accommodation is afforded by transverse spring-back seats with a central gangway ; two passengers in addition are accommodated by a longitudinal seat situated near the front entrance door. Drop windows, controlled by straps, are fitted at each side, and the bodywork of this vehicle is by Vickers, Ltd.

In addition, there is an Ivanhoe chassis to which a specially designed char-abanes body is fitted, the overhang of which is reduced to a minimum. In general layout this chassis corresponds closely to the vehicles already described.

Lastly, there is a Talisman chassis fitted with a 20-seater bus body, this having a four-cylinder engine, four-forward-speed-gearbox, and overhead worm final drive; the petrol tank is fitted at the off side, and is covered with wooden slats to prevent accidental damage by Stonee flung up by the -wheels.
