Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

ONE of the largest stands is that occupied by Automobiles M. Berliet and on it are displayed 14 different models. The smallest chassis is the 15cwt. This is shown both stripped and as a boX van, the latter being panelled in Sundetda on a framework of ash. The driver's cab has a seat the full Width and provided with a padded backrest. The power unit On this chassis is rated at 15.9 h.p.; it is coaled thermosiphonicaliy, has force-feed lubrication and is mounted as a unit with a fourspeed gearbox provided with central control. The drive is taken through a multiple-dry plate clutch to a spiral

bevel rear axle. An electric lighting and starting set is standardized and the chassis is mounted upon 820 mm. by 120 mm. pneumatic tyres fitted to disc wheels.

Next in order comes the 1-ton chassis. This is shown in three forms, as a hare chassis, a 14-seater saloon bus, and a Local Government Board ambulance. The bps is of the front-entrance type and is provided with an emergency door at the rear. Three of the four side windows drop to afford ventilation, and all the seats face forward. The forward portion of this chassis resembles that of the 15-ewt. model, brrt the Anal drive is by overhead worm.

• The ambulance follows the general construction required for this special type of vehicle and it is wood-panelled, the finish being the natural wood varnished.

Now we come to an interesting type of low-loading passenger chassis which is shown in chassis feTre. and as a 14seater coach, upholstered in leather, and with three doors at the near side, the driver's door being provided at the• off side. The equipment includes a oneman lioocl and side curtains opening with the door. This chassis has a 20 h.p. engine, pump water circulation, unit construction of engine and four speed gearbox and a double-reduction rear axle.

An example of the Stirling saloon bus, in which the 35-cwt. chassis is employed, may be called the medium type of passenger vehicle. It seats 17 passengers. This also is provided with a one-man-operated door, an emergency rear exit and a centre gangway.

An 18-seater Edinburgh bug is also mounted, on the same type of chassis.

This body is fitted with one doqr forward and an emergency door at the rear ; the former is controlled by the

driver through the medium of a conveniently placed handle so that the vehicle comes into the " pay-as-youenter " eategory. The seats all face forwards and drop windows are fitted.

The largest passenger model is a 26seater saloon bus on the 2i-ton chassis. This has an overhead-valve engine of particularly high efficiency rated at 80 h.p., unit-constructed four-speed gearbox with central control and doublereduction rear axle. This bus is of the one-man-operated type with an emergency door, drop windows and all seats facing forwaXd.

The 5-ton Berliet is shown as a chassis, a standard lorry, and as a three-way tipping wagon, the tipping gear taking the form of a special gearx interposed between the engine and the • ordinary gearbox. This is the only model in which the engine and gearbox form separate units, and in which the final drive is by roller chains.

The power unit of this heavy duty chassis is rated at 30 h.p., having a bore and, stroke of 110 mm. and 140 mm. respectively. The cooling water is circulated thermo-siphonicE.dly, and pressure lubrication is utilized for the bearings. Ignition is by magneto and carburation by a special Bernet instrument. A multipledry-plate clutch takes the drive from engine to gearbox. Solid tyres are fitted to the cast steel wheels.

The wheelbase of this model is 13 ft. 9 ins., and the track 5 ft. 7 ins. In the case of the tipping wagon the floor of the body is lined with steel.
