Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

B. Sandiford (CM, April 5) criticised Independent Express for using a MAN tractor unit in advertising where we claim to be a British company and proud of it.

The fact is we are proud to be British and buy UK manufactured goods and services whenever we can. For instance, all of our trailers are British-made and the bulk of our passenger vehicles are likewise.

However, our first priority is profitability. This means buying whatever equipment will best do the job and provide us and our customers with a reliable level of service.

When we started operations the Leyland Roadrunner did not exist and British Leyland had, quite frankly, a poor reputation for reliability and after-sales service as far as its tractive units were concerned.

At that time there were simply no British-made vehicles that suited our purposes — that is why we bought foreign. When these vehicles come up for renewal, we will once again consider all the options.
