Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

I AM PLEASED that Jackson Moore is concerned about the forthcoming "Suicide of the RHA" (CM April 12).

It is obvious he has never read The Treaty of Rome or its attendant secondary legislation (transport). He would find that the future of road haulage is in better and safer hands than it is in the United Kingdom.

The infrastructure is daft, but it is a proposal and there are enough safeguards to protect the industry, provided we have men of stature with enough guts to represent the haulage industry, in union and management; we are all in this together.

As for the pious appeal to "believe in competition", why did Jacko and his delegates vote for "total nationalisation" at the TUC conference? (It's on TV 'film).

This would seem at odds with his memberships views in my experience on the road.

His outburst in CM's March 22 edition about "Democracy: what's new?" when he attacked CM's editor, would have more credence if he could enlighten me, members, and maybe your readers, as to when the membership was consulted, balloted, or told, that the policy of the URTU was to nationalise every vehicle on the road; when Jack? I should point out that this policy was moved by Sid Weighell of the NUR, a well known supporter of road transport!

That's when you should have spoken up for competition Bro' Moore, not to sit and card vote for our (and the bosses') destruction.

A further question begs, "Why just EEC?" what about our Swedish importers? When

Bro' Harry Urwin spoke of banning foreign cars (even Fords

and others assembled abroad), how many TUC delegates voted "unanimous" and walked out and got in Volvo motorcars?

It would serve the interest of drivers and bosses better if our

• "leaders"(?) spoke up when needed and not when politically expedient.

I should close by saying to all you "own-account(C-licence to me) readers who welcome the demise of the RHA and think you are not involved, that the resolution includes you. ("all vehicles" are the words); perhaps the "anti-road haulage" fanatics of the FTA should not sleep so soundly in their beds, and after writing this letter I don't suppose I or my lads will ever be "guest of honour" at any of the aforementioned organisations' dinners.
