Obituary

WE regret to record the deaths of Mr. VT Roland Clarke and Mr. A. H. Hawkins. Mr. Clarke, who died last week aged 59, was transport manager of Clemersons Ltd., Loughborough. Mr. Hawkins, who died last week at the age of 82, was a pioneer busman and was largely responsible for the formation of what are now London Transport's Green Line services. In 1911 he launched the East Surrey Traction Co. Ltd. with two Leyland single-deckers in competition with the local horse buses. He also became the first, and only, managing director of Green Line Coaches Ltd. and London General Country Services Ltd. When London Transport was formed, Mr. Hawkins became general manager of Country Buses and Green Line Coaches, a position he held for the 12 years preceding his retirement in 1946.
