Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE articulated vehicle lends itself to a wide variety of applications and Britain is able to supply a full range of models. One of the smallest outfits is a 35-cwt. machine for which a Trojan prime mover is employed, whilst vehicles of around 55-65-ton capacity are available. The biggest tractors include the Thornycroft Mighty Antar, the Rotinoff GR7 Atlantic and the Scammell Super Constructor.

Exact assessment of the payload capacity of a given prime mover is difficult because the number of variables involved maker. it necessary, particularly with he heavier outfits, to treat cases individually.

Apart from the unladen weight of the semi-trailer itself, factors which affect the carrying capacity of any prime mover are the load ratings of the rear axle or axles and their tyres, the construction of the semi-trailer, which determines the position of the centre of gravity of the load relative to its coupling, and the terrain over which the vehicle is to be operated.

In the succeeding paragraphs the various prime movers produced by different makers are classified according to their approximate pay load capacity. Details of the specifications of these different models will be found in the tables at the end of this issue.

Most of the four-wheeled prime movers are rated between 74 and 12 tons, but there are several with a much higher rating. Machines in the 74-8-ton class are made by Austin, Dodge, Foden, Morris and Thornycroft (Trident), whilst there are two

versions of the Scammell Scarab rated at 3 and 6 tons, and an E.R.F. 6-tonner.

In the 8-10-ton category there are tractors manufactured by A.E.C. (Mercury and Monarch), Albion, Atkinson, Austin, Vauxhall, E.R.F., Ford, Guy (Otter), Morris and Seddon. Examples of 10-12-tonners are the Commer, Dennis, E.R.F., Guy Warrior, Leyland Comet, Rowe Hillmaster and Rutland.

Other four-wheeled prime movers are the A.E.C. Mandator (16 tons), liRE 15-tonner, Foden 17and 30tonners, Guy Invincible (16 tons), Leyland Beaver (20-25 tons), Scammell 15-, 17-, 20and 25-tonners and the Mountaineer (30-35 tons), and the Thornycroft Trusty (15 tons).

Apart from the sixwheeled prime movers in

the 55-65-ton class already mentioned, there are the A.E.C. Mammoth Major Mk. 111 (25-30 tons), Atkinson 25-toriner, E.R.F. 16and 30-tonners, Foden 5055-tonner, Guy Invincible (20 tons), Leyland Super Hippo (30 tons), Scammell Constructor (40-45 tons) arid Thornycroft Big Ben (25 tons and 35-38 tons).
