• Hammond Transport Group of Redhill, Surrey has pipped Swift to a £2m-a-year distribution contract from Toyota.

The two shortlisted hauliers were tendered for the three-year deal alongside TNT Contract Distribution, Seaking and Federal Express (CM 26 Aug-1 Sept 1993). Hammond has handled Toyota's spare car parts since 1991, but the manufacturer wanted to re-test the haulage market before switching to a leaner distribution system.

By October, Toyota expects to switch to a system in which its 270 UK dealers will be supplied by 08:30hrs every day.
