• In common with other amated mechanical transmissions, from Scania, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, ZF and Renault, Eaton's SAMT system employs air cylinders to exert the effort needed in changing gear, effectively replacing the muscles in the driver's
arm.
Gearchanges are made using a small "up/down" finger-tip lever, which can be positioned anywhere in the cab; MAN mounts it on the rght of the steering column. Engine and road speed are sensed and fed into a microprocessor which allows or prevents each selected shift, It also controls the action of the clutch, ensuring the drive is disengaged for the shortest possible time. Because the system's base Twin Spiitter gearbox is, uniquely, a constant mesh unit, rev synchronisation for downshifts is hastened by raising engine rpm (equivalent to the driver blipping his accelerator on a manual downshift) through automatic intervention in the electronic accelerator control, SAMT is offered on selected chassis models only by MAN, ERF and Iveco.
