Saunders-Roe, Ltd., East Cowes, Isle of Wl:ght

CAPABLE of alighting on either , land or water, the amphibian type of aircraft has peculiar advantages for certain kinds of work, and its use may enable capital outlay to be reduced. The advantages may well outweigh the slight additional weight and complication. A feature ot 'importance is that, having alighted on water, the pilot may lower his wheels and taxi up a hard or slipway, the introduction of a temporary wheeled carriage—always difficult on the seashore—being rendered unnecessary. measure of Seaworthiness is obtained, and the hull, of Alclad protected aluminium alloy, has four watertight dividing bulkheads, with a fully enclosed two-seat control cabin.

To facilitate repairs, all hull framing • is of straight section and no plating has curvature in more than one direction. The wing is of wood cantilever type.

The wheel undercarriage is retractable by means of a winch gear, easily operated by the pilot. The wheels are lowered instantaneously, and raised in about 30 seconds.

THE Cutty Sark is another amphibian, although it may be noted that either model can be supplied as purely a flying boat (saving 4110 lb. on the Cloud, or 170 lb. on the Cntty Sark), in which ease the disposable load is correspondingly increased.

The smaller machine accommodates four passengers in a cabin that is completely enclosed, and the starboard sliding window, together with a sliding section of the roof above it, forms an entrance way easily reached from a boat.

Dual control can be provided if required. The pilot is able to pick up or cast off moorings by standing up in his compartment and opening a triangular roof panel • standing thus, the two engine-throttie controls and switches are easily to hand.
