Formal Opening of North Circular Road.

Middlesex County Council is to arrange a ceremony for the formal opening of the North Circular Road, which will shortly be completed. This artery commences at the junction of the Great West Road and passes at a radius from the centre of London through Ealing, Willesden, Hendon, Finchley, Friern Barnet, Hornsey and Edmonton.

Its construction was commenced, as an unemployment-relief measure, in 1921, and, up to last year, the cost involved was £1,200,000. The final section, now approaching completion, is through Priem Barnet.

Basis of Proposed Renewals Fund.

It is recommended by the finance committee of Tottenham -Urbah District Council that a renewals fund should be inaugurated, as from April 1 next, for the replacement of existing vehicles. The following is the basis suggested :—

Aberdeen's New Double-deckers.

A protracted meeting of the transport committee of Aberdeen Town Council recently further considered the question of placing contracts for 12 double-deck buses. .Councillor George presided and intimated, at the close of the meeting, that it had been decided by a majority to re-affirm the former decision with regard to the recommendations for purchasing bus chassis, eight to be supplied by Crossley Motors, Ltd., and four by John I. Thornycroft and Co., Ltd.

The question of bus bodies (which had been allocated in the proportion of 10 to R. Y. Pickering and Co., Ltd., Wishaw, and two to Messrs. William Walker, Aberdeen) was referred to a sub-committee to confer with the contractors recommended.

Dealing with Congestion at Bournemouth.

A meeting of the highways committee of Bournemouth Corporation has discussed the question of traffic congestion in the centre of the town, caused primarily by the loading and unloading of goods.

The Chamber of Trade, in consultation -with the railway authorities, is being asked to consider the matter further with the sections of the Chamber more particularly concerned, with a view to a 'scheme being formulated, for submission to the committee, with the object of ameliorating, so far as possible, the traffic problems in the priocipal thoroughfares of the town.

Tenders for Snow-ploughing Tractors.

The wogks committee of Durham County Council has accepted the following tenders for the hire of tractors for snow ploughing :—Sir S. A. Sadler, Ltd., at 11s. 6d. per hour, and Mr. A. Todd at 12s. per hour. Cornwall's Dependence on Road Transport.

Strong opposition to the Salter Report was forthcoming from Mr. Edgar Trounson at the annual meeting of the Redruth Chamber of Commerce. He said that Cornwall, with only one through railway, was so dependent on road transport that if the report became . law it would entail the additional expenditure of thousands of pounds per annum.

It was decided that the Chamber should hold a special meeting to consider the report.

Facilitating Milk Transport.

The highways committee of Berks County Council does not object to the erection of roadside stages for the collection and delivery of milk churns in the Faringdon district. Certain conditions must, however, be met. An annual sum of 10s. must, it is recommended, be paid in respect of each stage, to enable the council to meet the premium on a third-party insurance policy in connection with claims that may arise as the result of accidents caused by, or in consequence of, the erection of the platforms.

Bexhill Decides Against Centralization.

Further to the paragraph in our issue dated February 3, a sub-committee of Bexhill Corporation has now considered a suggestion for the pooling of mechanical transport. It has concluded that this could not be satisfactorily effected without the creation of a separate transport department, which is not at present warranted.

110 New Buses and Trolleybuses for Birmingham.

The tramways and bus department of Birmingham Corporation is inviting tenders for the supply of 50 six-wheeled trolley-bus chassis suitable for carrying 58-seater double-deck bodies. The departmeut is also inviting tenders for 60 four-wheeled motorbus chassis suitable for carrying 54-seater double-deck bodies.

In each case, further particulars can be obtained from the Tramway and Omnibus Offices, The Council House, Congreve Street, Birmingham. Tenders have to be delivered by 10 a.m. on March 18, and have to be• sent to the chairman of the tramway and omnibus committee at the address given.

Increase in 'Middlesex Motors.

The local taxation committee ofMiddlesex County Council reports that during December and January Road Fund duties amounting to £583,494 were collected in respect of 75,065 licences. This is an increase of £10,432 in revenue and 3,339 licences, as compared with the fir,ures for the corresponding period a year ago.

More Trolley-buses for Ipswich.

The transport committee of Ipswich Corporation recommends the purchase of four double-deck trolley-buses at an estimated cost of £1,750 each. The committee points out that the present trade depression is having an adverse effect on the financial position of the transport undertaking, and it is only with a view to providing work that it puts forward the recommendation at the present time.
