AWARNING came from Lord Chesham, chairman of the British Road Federation, that Britain's first 1,000 miles of motorway could take another 15 years to complete. He was commenting last week on a report published by the Federation which shows that 10 years after the motorway programme began, only 391 miles are open to traffic.

"Successive governments have promised to complete the 1,000 miles by the early 1970s," said Lord Chesham, "but we are still 609 miles short of the target. At the present rate it will be 1981 before they are all in use."
