• Such was the slickness of operation at Sunday's Essex eliminator that the 100 competitors had completed their demon strations of skill by 2.45, and the prize-giving began .at the unprecedentedly early hour of 3.15!

Once again, Ford Motor Co provided the site for the competition at its Warley headquarters and was rewarded by a class win by one of its own company drivers, L. Bliss, who took class H. Two other class winners. B. Hegenbarth. of Plessey Ltd. and B. Roper of NCL, were also driving Fords, to the obvious delight of Peter Livsey, Ford director of truck marketing, when he presented the prizes.

Driving standards in the manoeuvring tests were generally high this year, as the low penalties of most of the class winners testify. Overall winner Mr J. Linney, in particular. who took class A for Shell-Mex with only 52 penalties, showed how skilfully the tests could he completed with a relatively small vehicle; the Post Office drivers, too, drew comment for some neat and nimble driving and three of them won the team award.

Some drivers who had gone astray on the varied and searching road route were later surprised to find their original 40 penalties deleted. Because one or two junctions on the official route map were capable of being misread, the organizers decided, in fairness, not to penalize drivers who had missed the right road.
