MR. S. W. NELSON HONOURED.

A farewell presentation was made to Mr. S. W. Nelson by the West Midland Division of the C.M.U.A. on the. occasion of his leaving Birmingham, where he had earned great popularity as clerk to the West Midland Traffic Commissioners and Licensing Authority, and by his helpful advice at public meetings, to take up his new post as chairman of the Central Transport Board of the Federated Malay States.

The meeting, which was presided over by Mr. S. Macadam, was confined to executive members of the local committee and one or two friends. In his reply, Mr. Nelson mentioned how helpful the local C.M.U.A. officials had been in educating operators. Ile also referred to the manner in which Morris Commercial Cars, Ltd., had pioneered meetings of operators to elucidate problems presented in the early days by the 1033 Act. •

A.R.O. South-Eastern Meeting Plans.

The following arrangements for subarea meetings have been made by A.R.O. South-Eastern Area:—Chatham, second Wednesday in each month, 95, High Street, 7.45 p.m.; Chichester, second Monday, Railway Hotel, Barnham, 8 p.m.; Dartford, last Monday, "Bull's Head," High Street ; Eastbourne, second Wednesday, Rose and Crown Hotel, Langney Road, 7.30 p.m. ; Hastings, second Tuesday, Central Hall Annexe, Middle Street; Redhill, second Thursday, Tower Hotel, Cromwell Road, 7.30 p.m.; Tunbridge Wells, first Monday, Camden Hotel.

Joint Action Against L.M.S.

A special joint meeting of members of A.R.O. and the C.M.U.A. was held at Bradford, last week, to consider in greater detail the application by the L.M.S. Railway Co, for additional motor vehicles at its Bradford base. Permission is sought for the addition of vehicles and trailers totalling 39, and the deletion of two vehicles.

At the Bradford meeting it was decided that neither time nor expense should he spared in opposing the application, which is down for hearing at Bradford on July 9.

Rates Stabilization: Interest Growing.

Members of A.R.O. Killarnarsh (near Sheffield) Sub-area are taking up the • question of stabilizing haulage rates. Following a long discussion at a meeting last week, which was addressed by Mr. L. Cadwallader, of the Yorkshire headquarters stall of A.R.O., it was decided that the next meeting should be devoted especially to detailed consideration of the stabilization of local rates.

During the discussion, cemplaints were made of rate-cutting both by rail. ways and road interests. It was also 'contended that the haulage rates of some local authorities were inadequate.
