Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Brief Details of a Device which is Simple in Operation. "

I T 16 NOT surprising, in view of the fickle weather which now appears to be our unenviable lot., that increasing attention should be focused on the type of passenger-carrying vehicle which gives absolute comfort and protection in all weathers: As we indicated in our last week's issue, in a descriptive article dealing with " All-weather Coach Developments.," various forms of body design are favoured for vehicles of this type. In practically all cases, however, dropdown side lights are employed, and if these can he easily and quickly manipulated into any desired position the

vehicle to which they are fitted can readily he converted from a totally enclosed type to semi-open type, or vice ,versa.

There are a few excellent types of adjustable Windows suitable for use on passenger-carrying vehicles, but., unfortunately, body-builders, with one or mai exceptions, have fought, shy of fitting such equipment on account of the initial cost of most of the types, and also, in

several instances, because of their complicated nature. Moreover, they have also considered it.preferable to build a vehicle with fixed windows rather.than lam the risk of using adjustable lights which may irritate passengers by constant rattling, . quite apart from the possibility of getting out of order.

One of the simplest types of windott regulator we have seen is that known as the Dura, which is an American pioduction for which the Lawson Manufacturing Co., Ltd., 323, -Caledonian Road, London, N. 1, are the soletEuropean representatives. The regulator is made in three 'types, these being the crank type, the lever type, and the Clement .

type. Although_ the last-named is specially recommended for use in courier:. tion with vehicles on regular passeriger. service, the fundamental principle of the three types of' regulator is the' same. The Clement type, was specifically designed to meet certain special cares where constructional limits made the' installation of either the crank or lever type unsuitable, or, at least, difficult.

This regulator has practically no Mechanism below the belt line, and is for this reason specially suitable for doors of light construction, where the . thickness renders the installation of other types impracticable: In the Clement regulator-the movement of the window Is effected by a lever which is. attached to the steel channel fixed to the bottom of the glass. The weight of the window is compensated by a spiral spring, which is clearly shown in our illustration. The upper end of the lever has a roller which slides along the metal channel which supports the window, to the movement of which it is able to ,accommodate itself.

The channels which support, the glass are fitted With lug' s from which connection is made by thin rods to springcatch levers that slide in notched locking tubes on each side of the window. By disengaging the catch levers from the notch-es the window can be automatically adjusted for -height by raising or lower

fug the lever until it engages with one of the notches of the locking tube.

It. is claimed that-with this type of window rattle is entirely absent. The fitting can be used either with frameless windows or, as was originally intended, with a sheet-glass framed window. In both cases the window runs in special thick felt channels, the channel being cut in the solid felt, which is bedded in the wooden pillars of the window.

A feature which will make ready appeal is the price at which the regulator' is marketed, which is 36s., with discounts of 12i per cent. for retail orders and 25 per cent, for orders of 140 or over given within a period of one year.

The regulator has only beep introduced for motorbus work very recently, and the representatives in this country have already created considerable interest in the fitting amongst such concerns as Thomas Tilling, Ltd. ; East Kent -Road Car Co., Ltd. ; London Lorries,Ltd. ; London General Omnibus Co., Ltd. ; James Bartle and Co., Ltd., etc.
