• Stagecoach has been told for the second time in just over a year that it may have to get rid of a bus company took over.
Trade and Industry Secretary Peter Lilley has asked the Monopolies and Mergers Commission to discuss with Stagecoach surrendering part of its acquisition of Hastings & District, which the commission says "weakens competition".
Stagecoach is still talking to the Office of Fair Trading about its recent purchase of Portsmouth Citybus. A company spokesman says the Elm acquisitions of Portsmouth and Hastings have to be "put in perspective" with the 227m it has spent on bus company takeovers in the past two years.
