DETAILS of the combustion system employed by F. Perkins, Ltd., Peterborough, in their new Four 99 1.6-litre oil engine, have now been released. It is covered by British Patent No. 599,755. The upper part of the combustion chamber is hemispherical in shape and is machined into the cylinder head. The

• lower half is formed by an inserted machined plug, which also contains an oval port connecting the chamber with the cylinder.

A pintic-type nozzle injects fuel into the chamber. During the greater part of the piston's compression stroke air is transferred into the chamber from the cylinder upwards through the port, swirl being produced and the air passing transversely across the nozzle.

As the piston nears the top of its stroke the direction of air transter changes gradually from vertical to horizontal. When combustion is about to begin the final part of the air is transferred rapidly into the chamber, thus promoting considerable turbulence to the air-fuel mixture and assuring complete combustion.

FARES RESISTANCE LOWER THAN EXPECTED

HIGHER bus fares which were instituted by Leicester Corporation in November, have not resulted in the expected passenger decline. Mr. John Cooper, general manager, said last week that although there had been some reduction in traffic, the drop had been smaller than expected.

Birmingham Corporation will hear this month that their undertaking is now making a small profit. Ald. Harry Watton, chairman of the transport committee, is to present a six-month report to the city council, showing the financial situation between April and September, 1957.
