the loaded mileage of British Road Services is 10,000,000 a week, says a statement issued by the Road 'Haulage Executive this week, reviewing its growth since its inauguration in February, 1948.

One of the biggest tasks with which the R.H.E. had had to deal was the examination of more than 17,000 applications for original permits to operate beyond the 25-mite limit after February 1.

Since its inception, the R.H.E. has acquired 2,000 undertakings and now employs a staff of 66,000, half of it vehicle crews. There are nine divisions of the R.H.E. One is Pickfords, covering the whole country for the,carriage of "special traffics," and the other eight are divided into 31 districts, which are to be split into over 300 groups, each operating up to 200 vehicles. So far, 181 group managers have been

appointed.

A full range of staff negotiating machinery has been introduced in conjunction with the trade unions. •
