Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

The second edition of "The Rights and Duties of Transport Undertakings," by H. Berm Davis, MA., and P. M. Landau, LL.B." (London), has just been published at 10s. 6d; by Sir Isaac Pitman and Sons, Ltd., 29, Parker Street, London, W.e.2. The first edition of this work (which has become so well known amongst transport students as to be familiarly referred to as "Barr Davis") was produced in 1926, and it is primarily for the student taking examinations of the Institute of Transport. '

The. second edition become necessary bepause of law changes introduced by the Road Prange, Act, 1930, the Carriage by Air Act, 1932; etc., and the opportunity has been taken for adding chapters on rivers and canals, aviation law and international regulations. Tables of statutes and cases are included, also a comprehensive index.

New Road on Canal Bed.

The new road built on the bed of the disused canal between Mountain Ash and Aberdare has now been opened to traffic. This additional highway through the Aberdare Valley is three miles long and cost 151,000 to construct, It is a projection of the canal-bed road between Abercynon and Mountain Ash, which was opened in 1927.

Rubber for Road Markings.

A new system for marking traffic-control lines, arrows and letters, evolved at the Port Dunlop works of the Dunlop Rubber Co., Ltd., is now being tried out at Polney Corner, on the London-Brighton road. The markings are built up from rubber units 12 ins, long, these beim.; delivered to the site of operations in the form of rubber casings, which are tilled with concrete and bedded into the road as desired. The casings can be set in any type of road surface, and can easily be filled and fixed by ordinary road workmen. Furthermore, their initial cost is small.

Rubber road markings have been under test at a number of centres and we are told that their features of visibility and hard wear have been welt proved.:

Greenwood and Batley Acquisitions.

Greenwood and Batley, Ltd., Albion Works, Leeds, informs us. that it has recently purchased the goodwill, patterns and drawings of John Hands and Sons, Ltd., and Hollings and Guest, Ltd., of Birmingham.

A New Haulage Registration. „.

Collins Express Parcel Service, Ltd., has been registered with a capital of 44,000 to acquire the business of a carrier and haulage contractor carried on by C. E. Collins at Lichfield Road, -Walsall Wood, Staffs., as Collins Express Parcel Service.

Firestone's Boxing Club Activities.

A successful. programme of boxing was recently held before an enthusiastic gathering at the Firestone works on the Great West Road. Members of the Firestone Boxing Club met representatives of the Van den Bergh and Unilever House Clubs, and the programme con sisted of 11 contests. The victories were evenly distributed between the Nirestone boxers and their opponents.

Representations on Overloading Prosecutions.

The transport committee of the Liverpool Chamber of Commerce has decided to request the town clerk and chief constable of Liverpool to receive a deputation, in view of the penalties recently inflicted on certain transport owners in connection with overloading.

Insurances Cancelled Without

Notice.

It has been suggested that representations should be made by the roadtransport section of the Liverpool Chamber of Commerce to the Ministry of Transport and to the association of insurance companies, with reference to the hardship caused to motor-vehicle owners through the cancellation of insurance policies without notice. The road-transport section considers that there should be an agreement as to tbe period of notice that should be given when it is desired to terminate a risk.

Attention was also given at the latest meeting of the section to the question of forming road-transport sections by other Chambers of Commerce. It is thought, however, that the initiative should be taken by concerns interested in road haulage in the centres where Chambers of Commerce are established.

The Railway Man and the Motor Driver.

This is an interesting pamphlet, written in conversational style arid issued by the British Road Federation, 186, Palace Chambers, Westtnin sten London, S.W.1. It gives, in a simple and concise manner, a summary of the present road and rail situation, and it goes into the questions of the legislative restrictions on railways, and as to who pays for the roads.

A Paper on Chassis Design. , At the next London meeting of the Institution of Automobile Engineers, to be held on February 7 at the Royal Society of Arts, John Street, W.0.2, at 7.45 p.m., Mr. L. U. Dawtrey, of the Standard Motor Co., Ltd., will read a paper entitled " Some Problems in Chassis Design." The author will also read his paper at Coventry on February 14, Leeds on February 15, Wolverhampton on February 21 and Manchester on February 22,
