Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

KEN LIVINGSTONE'S introduction of the bureaucratic nightmare that is the London low-emission zone (LEZ) has nothing to do with the emissions standards laid down by the EU. It is all for political gain, at great cost to a large number of small businesses inside the M25.

If you look at other countries, Holland appears to he the only one that has recognized that the carrot rather than the stick is the correct way forward.

The Dutch government has set a procedure in place in five major towns to upgrade vehicles to the Euro-2 standard by offering a grant of 30% of the cost to upgrade the exhaust systems of vehicles below this standard.Vehicles under 12 tonnes GVW benefit from an 80% grant.

This is a far cry from the ludicrous penalties that the Mayor of London wishes to impose.

The LEZ also creates double standards. If vehicles in Holland are upgraded to a standard laid down by their government, they can then operate on the European stage at will.

But if any of these vehicles come to the UK and enter the London LEZ, which many will, they will be operating illegally against Ken Livingstone's self-imposed law. If, as we have drummed into us virtually every hour, the new EU is for our own good, how can double standards of this nature operate within the community?

I feel the lifeblood of London is about to change as it has never done before.Tr-ucks deliver what the city needs every day to survive.A politician cutting the use of certain types of vehicles on a whim is going to have far-reaching effects. Has anybody carried out a survey of exactly how many businesses that operate within the LEZ will be affected? The results might be alarming.

If your magazine were to conduct such a survey, it might give a clearer picture, which you could then publish.

The way politicians on all sides are hiding behind the 'green barrier' is sickening. The EU emissions standards that are in the pipeline will achieve the necessary results without politicians introducing any further restrictions on our lives.

Not including cars in the LEZ scheme is like trying to stop the draft through the keyhole in the door when the roof has been blown off Never mind the unacceptable situation that Nick Fairholme, head of the LEZ, has admitted— that they will be unable to police certain types of trucks (CM 17 May). How do these people get elected into these jobs?
