Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

The diagram of the Jacobs brake, accompanying the feature "The case for retarders" {CM May 3) gives the impression that No 3 exhaust valve is opened by No 1 exhaust valve rocker.

No 1 exhaust valve is opened by No 1 injector rocker, which is fitted with a special hexagon-head adjusting bolt, as are all the injector rockers, which open their respective exhaust valves.

As Graham Montgomerie says in the text, the Jacobs brake can befitted only to Cummins, Detroit Diesel and Mack engines. The latter engine I have not seen, but I .know Cummins and Detroit Diesel use the same type of fuel system.

I am a commercial fitter, my pet engines being Cummins and Detroit Diesel,
