A careful qhoice of gearing by Bedford's engineers to match the power and torque output of Cummins's L10 engine enabled the TM 3800 to maintain high average speeds over difficult motorway sections while using less fuel over the whole of the CM Scottish route than any other 38-tonner tested at that time.

Cummins claims that even running at 1,900 to 2,000rpm, the 10-litre engine is not at all thirsty and this wag verified by our consumption figures.
