• Drivers should know the weight of their lorry and its contents. This was the recommendation of the jury when they returned a verdict of accidental death at the inquest at Liverpool last week, on a three-year-old girl who was crushed to death after a 29-ton container vehicle overturned at a roundabout.

Mr Ronald Morris, driver of the vehicle for Jarvis Cranmar Transport Ltd, Sand Hills, Liverpool, told the jury that when he started to negotiate the roundabout he was travelling at about 10 mph. As he began to turn left to come out of the island he saw through his rearview mirror that his near offside wheels were lifting up. He touched his brakes for the first time as he had had no reason to brake earlier because he was only travelling slowly. Lorry drivers were aware of the roll-over theory but no one had told them the speed they could go round roundabouts. He did not know what the container contained nor whether it was full.

Mr Henry Cassidy, assistant borough engineer, Bootle, said he had examined the roundabout — at the junction of Hawthorne Road and Merton Road, Bootle — and certain proposals were to be considered by the council. These included raising part of the carriageway on the north-west side of the roundabout in order to reduce the camber by about six inches,
