SUBMITTING proposals to the transport committee for raising the minimum tram and t-011eybus fare to 2d. and maintaining the minimum motorbas fare at 3d, Mr. E. R. L. Fitzpayne, general manager of Glasgow Transport Department, was met by counter-proposals aiming at introducing

a new Id. fare. '

By 10 votes to 4,the transport committee rejected the transport manager's recommendations and passed instead new proposals reintroducing the Id. tram fare for one stage and reducing the cost of the 12-journey weekly ticket from 3s. 6d. to 3s. No id. units are included in the Proposed fare schedules, which now pass to the city council for consideration.

Revenue Loss of 140,000 Defending his original proposals, Mr. Fitzpayne pointed out that the intrnduction of Id. tickets -for'Slrigle-stage passengers would add great difficulty to the conductors' work. It would also mean a' 'reduction 'of £40,000 in the

annual revenue. ,

The. convener of the transport committee, Cllr. L. S. Blanche, said that the conuninee now believed. that effOrts should be'made _to encourage the shortdistance traveller, ingtead of discouraging him, as had been the policy' for some time. past. The introduction of the lid. minimum ticket, it. was stated, reduced the number. Of passengers carried by 40m; a r'ar. The transport manager's suggestion of a 2d, minimum, the committee believed, would mean another drop of 50m. passengers.

Faced with similar problems, Derby Corporation, which last week was granted its second application for higher fares, heard by the Licensing Authority. on July 3, is now considering another increase. Charges first went up -last April, and the new advanced rates will be introduced on September 9. . Nevertheless, the undertaking will suffer a loss of £46,000 this year.

The possibility of a 2[1: minimum fare and the reduction of all types of concession are now being considered.

Oxford Fares Up To-morrow

The East M id la n d ,Licensing Authority has now "approved the application of City of Oxford Motor Services, Ltd., for a general. variation of fares.The new rates -wilt be introduced tomorrow on all city services, and at a later date on country 'Ain's.

The application of the .concern to raise the minimum return fare from 6d. to Is 6d. was refused by the Authority. Th.:. company has now submitted new proposals, suggesting that return tickets from 6d.-1s. should go up by ld.; and Othersby comparable' amounts giving a maximum increase of

5d. Altogether 67 services are affected. and in the case of 17, new workmen's rates. are suggested.

Last Wednesday, Chesterfield Transport Committee met ,to discuss the deteriorating position of the under a32

taking's finances. Fares were raised last April, the first_ time in 25 years, but a substantial deficit is expected on the current year's operations. It is expected that proposals to abolish concession tickets will shortly go before the

United Counties .Omnibus Co., Ltd., has applied for permission to increase charges. op 28 services to bring them into line with those charged by Northampton Corporation. • In the West Midland Traffic Area, North-Western Road Car Co., Ltd., has received permission to bring fares in the area into line with those charged elsewhere in the concern's territory.

Aberdeen Corporation has now applied for revised fares on 30 services. HighlandTransport Co., -Ltd; Inverness[operating as far north' as John -o'Groats, has applied for permission to add 20 per cent. to all single and return fares. Fifty services are affected. Fares on 'the_ servicesoperated by Yorkshire Woollen District 'CO.,. Ltd:, having gone up, West Riding Auto-mobile'Co., Ltd.. Wakefield, has applied for sanction to .bring .charges into line on, parallel services. Huddersfield Corporation is making a similar application in view of the recent grant to Hanson's Buses, Ltd.

Reduction of certain fares and the 'introduction of additional single fares on some services are requested by Barton Transport, Ltd.

An 'application for permission to add id. to all single fares from Id.-71d. has nOw been filed by Rochdale Corporation and its joint operators. Over 30 routes are affected.
