Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

News from the US that oil prices have topped $50 per barrel does not bode well for road transport. Sorry to return to the subject, but it would be shortsighted to ignore it. Threats of a military disturbance in Nigeria are understood to be behind the latest crisis, but whatever it is this time the uncertainty does nothing for long-term planning and profit forecasting.

We trust the Chancellor will read the runes and abandon the planned duty increase on fuel once and for all. For this industry to be healthy it requires a stable economic climate. Instability in the oil market is, sadly, something we're all having to come to terms with in the post-9/11 society. The threat of duty increases hanging over the road transport industry like the executioner's axe is both unhelpful and unnecessary, Gordon. Drop it now!

"The threat of duty increases hanging over the industry is unhelpful and unnecessary"

Faced with such uncertainty any rightminded operator will no doubt be considering alternative energy sources. Natural gas is a commonly cited example, and it's one that has merit. But here again the government's position is at best uncertain. Word is filtering back to us that it has gone cold on the idea of promoting natural gas as an alternative to diesel. We have to wonder why: the technology may be pricey, but it would only require a nudge from the Treasury to make it feasible. Once again, the fog descends.

Soon attention will turn to a General Election when, theoretically, the power shifts back to the electorate. Many interested parties will be lobbying for political support during this period, but let us not underestimate the strength of this industry. We need to shout about it. If you're asked for your opinion offer it. If not, offer it anyway.
