• The first prosecutions brought by the SELNEC PTE for fare evasion were heard in the Manchester City magistrates' court last week.

. Joseph P. Bravender, of 38 Weller Avenue, Chorlton-cum-Hardy, was fined a total of £5 for failing to pay the proper fare on three occasions in July 1970. On each occasion he was travelling on the 94 bus service and only paid is for a Is 6d journey.

John C. James, of 135 Lord Lane, Failsworth. was also fined a total of £5 Irt respect of five offences of a similar nature. Mr James travelled to work on the 76 bus service and 65 service and on each occasion only paid is for a Is 6d journey.

Mr Ian Buttress, prosecuting, pointed out that SELNEC were strengthening their team of inspectors to deal with fare evasion.

The stipendiary magistrate stated: "As these are the first summons to be brought, I don't want to impose heavy fines. If there is a repetition, more substantial fines are likely to be forthcoming."
