It was announced, last Friday, by Mr. George Williams, Cardiff, chairman of the Industrial Development Council for South Wales and Mon., that a plant to consume 3,000 tons of coal per week by the low-temperature carbonization process for conversion into oil, is to be erected immediately in South Wales by Low Temperature Carbonisation, Ltd.

Power.farming Demonstrations Dropped.

The power-farming demonstrations proposed in connection with the Oxford Farm Mechanization Conference, to be held during the first week of January, have been cancelled. The reason given is that the demonstrations, if held, might have led to misunderstanding on the part of makers and distributors of appliances not invited to take part.

Lanarkshire Road Scheme Approved.

Subject to details being approved and the work being put in hand before May 31, 1940, the Ministry of Transport has approved the fivea3,Tea.rs' programe of Lanark County Road Board. The work will cost £686,399 and the Ministry will make a grant of £519,929.

Engineers to Discuss Roads.

The opening meeting of the 1936-37 session of the Institution of Civil Engineers takes place on November 3, when Sir Alexander Gibb, G.B.E., C.D., F.R.S., will deliver his presidential address. The important part that engineering plays in connection with road design and safety is indicated by the fact that three meetings in this session are allotted to this particular subject. 271 ABNORMAL LOADS: NO .

DAMAGE TO ROADS.

Last year, 271 notices of the carrying of exceptional loads. were , given to Northants County Council. No apparent damage resulted to the roads.

This tribute to the efficiency of the modern abnormal-load vehicle is contained in the annual report of Mr. A. E. Black, Northants county surveyor. He says that a significant feature of the rapid growth in road traffic is the number of extraordinarily heavy loads passing through the county.

Adjustable Jet for Fordson Eightcylindered Units.

A new product of F. J. Evans, Ltd., Grange Road, London, N.W.10, is an adjustable jet for Fordson eightcylinder commercial vehicles, priced at 5s. each. It incorporates a needle valve, devised for insertion in place of the plug under each of the twO jets in the standard carburetter. Whilst affording a method of regulating the supply of petrol within fine limits, these valves are claimed also to assist in breaking up the fuel spray.
