TRUCK DRIVERS in the European Union (EU) should not let a drop of alcohol pass their lips when they are working,a European Parliament report has recommended.
Following the European Commission's review of the ELI road safety action plan. a European Parliament transport committee report says: "There should be an ELI-wide zero-alcohol limit for new drivers as well as for professional CV or bus drivers."
The report says this is one of the measures needed to reduce the 40,(X)0 road fatalities recorded in the EU every year.
"Much more still needs to be done if we are to achieve the EU's objective of halving the number of fatal accidents by 2010," it warns.
Other proposals in the report include the standardisation and testing of alcohol 'interlock' breath detector systems, which prevent drivers from starting their vehicles if they have alcohol on their breath.
The EU should "promote the rapid introduction" of these systems, the report concludes.
