• Ford Motor Co. has added a 22-tong.t.w. tractive unit to its D series range. The new model is a D800 developed by the Special Vehicles Order Department from 108in.-wheelbase chassis commonly used for tipper models. The vehicle has the Ford 6-litre turbocharged diesel producing 150 bhp at 2,400 rpm; gross torque is 3491b. ft. at 1,800 rpm.

Although developed by SVO engineers the new tractive unit can be built as a normal production model and the recommended retail price, including delivery, is £2,430.

The kerb weight of the unit is 8,5701b; rear axle capacity is 19,500lb and it is plated for 9 tons; front axle capacity is 10,6401b and plated weight is 3.75 tons. Shock absorbers are fitted at both axles, and tyre sizes are 9.00-20 14-ply on 20in.

10-stud wheels.

The engine drives an Eaton two-speed rear axle through a 13in. single-plate diaphragm clutch and a Turner wide-ratio gearbox. The rear axle ratios available are 5.14/7.02 to 1 or 5.57/7.60 to I.

The model has the Custom tilt cab as standard, manual steering, a 50gal fuel tank and dual air-hydraulic braking, with power-assisted hand brake and a load sensing valve.

Ford has developed a specially tailored fifth-wheel coupling for the new 22-ton artic, this being based on the coupling plate already available as a regular Ford production option. The installation includes the coupling, steel or rubber rear wings, threeline air hoses and a trailer wiring loom, and the recommended retail price with steel fender is £150.
