The quiet running of steam omnibuses is likely to prove a very important factor in their further adoption. Their cost of operation is certainly not more than those of the petrol type.

Sir David Stewart, chairman of directors of the Great North of Scotland Railway Company, stated at the recent annual general meeting that the results of the Ballater and Braemar service were so satisfactory that the company had ordered additional vehicles. A tyre contract had been made on a car mile basis which was considerably less than the cost during 1904.

We wonder upon what 'bus the South Shields deputation based their report? They found the smell of petrol highly objectionable, the vibration excessive and discomforting to passengers, the shocks at periods of stopping, starting, and changing of speeds severe. The Mayor has received a petition to call a town's meeting on the whole matter, and Alderman Readhead has offered to start a service of Wolseley omnibuses himself. Royal Sirdar-Buffer tyres were fitted to the Durkopp, Maudslay, Durham-Churchill, and Crossley-Leyland public service vehicles at the recent Islington Show.

The service of Clarkson's Chelmsford steam omnibuses at Torquay is being extended ; three new chassis are ready for the coachbuilders to fit char-a-banc bodies.

The design of omnibus body which was exhibited by the Motor Car Emporium at Islington gives four extra inside seats, avoids the entry of dust behind, and utilises the space to the left of the driver for the door.

Several railway companies which are promoting motor omnibus Bills have agreed to the insertion of clauses limiting their running to routes beginning or ending at one of their stations, Mr. H. Bailey, assistant superintendent of the Chester and Holyhead district of the L. and N.W. Railway, has been appointed officer in charge of the company's motor omnibus services for North Wales.

The running times of one of the Road Car Durkopp double-deck omnibuses are of interest. We took these a few nights back over the five-mile trip between Oxford Circus and Hammersmith :—

Birmingham is to have competition between motor omnibus companies, unless some working arrangement is arrived at between the Birmingham and Midland Tramways Company and the Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus Company. There is room in the great city of the Midlands for both companies, as new routes can be served and new custom will arise pati passu as the additional omnibuses are delivered by the manufacturers.
