A NEW type of lock washer, for which patents have been applied, has become available in the UK.

The Nord-Lock washers are fitted in pairs. They have ramps on their inner mating surfaces and radial teeth on the outer surfaces. When the fastener is tightened the teeth bite into it and the joint material.

Any tendency for the fastener to loosen, as a result of vibration for example, causes each outer washer to slide up the ramp of its mate and thus tend to wedge the fastener and prevent it loosening further.

The supplier of Nord-Lock, Apex Pneu-Power of St Albans, says that the washers are reusable and need only 10 per cent more torque than normal to overcome the wedge action and release the fastening. Twenty per cent more torque than normal is needed to tighten the fastening.

The washers are bright-zinc coated and case hardened and can be used with standard or DAF's MAIN dealer in the Soutl of London has undergone change of ownership. C.
